Respecting the history of a much-loved home while bringing a little contemporary fun
The Navy House offered an opportunity to work with a home that already had significant historic and architectural character, while making its spaces work for contemporary family life.
The existing character has been carefully retained and complemented with a playful colour palette and contemporary finishes. A lofted modern extension sits lightly above the original home, while natural materials and soft curves help the old and new spaces flow together.
Rather than separating the historic and contemporary parts of the house, the design allows them to have a conversation with one another — creating a home that feels respectful of its past but relaxed and very much of its own time.
